For the project, each farm voluntarily adopts replicable sustainable environmental practices, increasing their resilience to pressure and threats of climate change.

Approximately 37 families dedicated to cattle breeding and fattening in the sub-basin of the Trinidad River in Capira, West Panama province, have been implementing water conservation and silvopastoral systems to produce efficiently, and recover forest areas and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Through a press release, the PA.NA.M.A. Foundation explained that it is executing the project called “Sustainable cattle raising implementing measures to adapt to climate change in the middle section of the sub-basin of the Trinidad River'', whose trust fund is administered by the Natura Foundation and affects the population settled in the communities of Los Faldares, El Mamey, La Pita, Honda Arriba, La Humildad, La Tagua, Laja Lisa or El Caraño, Los Cañones, Los Ortigales, and Nueva Arenosa.

For the project, each farm voluntarily adopts replicable sustainable environmental practices to increase its resilience to the pressures and threats of climate variability, while contributing to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration in the river sub-basin.

One method now used by farmers is the silvopastoral system, which combines trees with pasture and animals on a plot of land.

Eunices Mariscal, the project technician, said that even the watering area for the cattle has changed.

“To manage the farm properly, the cattle now, instead of going down to the river or to the tributaries that feed them, receive water in drinking troughs that have been established in other areas far away from the ones that need to be recovered and maintained,” he emphasized.
