Many companies in the country have realized the relationship between their business and biodiversity.

Some 24 companies established in the Dominican Republic are part of the Red List Rescue Mission project that seeks to contribute to the conservation of endangered species of flora in the country, an initiative of the National Business Support Network for Environmental Protection (Ecored).

The plan, which began in 2018 and is developed through the National Botanical Garden (JBN for its acronym in Spanish), comprises each company sponsoring a plant from a red list of species that present some threat to contribute to their conservation through reproduction and planting.

The project has been so well accepted by the business sector that it was initially designed for 16 companies, and then the list had to be expanded to 25, said Ecored’s executive director, María Alicia Urbaneja, during an interview with Forbes Dominicana.

Because of this initiative, notes Urbaneja, many companies in the country have realized the relationship between their businesses and biodiversity. Therefore, Ecored will dedicate its next edition of Sustainable Profits to this topic, a meeting that the organization organizes to put environmental issues on the agenda.

“Investing in biodiversity to protect our natural capital” was the theme of the forum. It was held on July 28 to motivate investment in projects and infrastructure that guarantee the health of biodiversity.

Urbaneja considered that this topic is important because “business cannot advance in a sick society” and because losing species represents a significant risk for humanity.

Failure of climate action, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse are the top three global risks, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2022.

“Over a 10-year horizon, the health of the planet dominates concerns: environmental risks are perceived as the five most critical long-term threats to the world, as well as the most potentially damaging to people and the planet (...),” says a report by the body.

It should be noted that of the ten most severe risks identified by the organization, five are environmental.

In the Dominican Republic, 434 species have been identified as threatened, of which 69 are critically endangered, 95 endangered, and 260 in the vulnerable category, according to the most recent official reports.
