The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, received last Wednesday the representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, received last Wednesday the representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for Central America and the Dominican Republic, Francisco Quevedo, to strengthen cooperation ties between the Central American country and the financial institution.

This was stated by the Presidential House in Tegucigalpa in a press release, adding that the IDB representative in Honduras, María José Jarquín, also took part in the meeting.

Quevedo described as “magnificent” the meeting with the Honduran president, who today completed six months of having assumed power, and said that later “we will agree on a strategy” that will allow the IDB “to support Honduras in the priority issues for the government of President Castro.”

“We are in some initial talks to determine the strategy, but obviously, there are common issues in which we will surely talk,” said the IDB senior official, according to official information.

He added that the IDB, in its vision towards 2025, values issues such as integration, support for diversity, both gender and cultural, as well as the promotion of small businesses and the promotion of digitalization.

According to Quevedo, the IDB is supporting Honduras in the fight against poverty through the Solidarity Network (Red Solidaria in Spanish) program promoted by the Honduran president.

The IDB representative in Tegucigalpa said that part of the conversation with Castro focused on the Red Solidaria program, which receives support from the Inter-American Bank’s portfolio that was already approved and in execution.

Jarquín also said that “the current portfolio of credit to Honduras comprises 24 loan operations with the public sector for a value of at least 1.2 billion dollars that are being executed in the areas prioritized in the framework of the three strategies proposed by the IDB and Honduras, which include social sectors, digitalization of the country and integrity and transparency,” the statement added.

The official of the financial institution also said that so far, this year has already been disbursed by 118.5 million dollars for budget support.

These funds go directly to the national treasury, and the second disbursement will be for an equal amount to support transparency and accountability issues.
